Flying Home After a Cruise: Picking a Safe Flight Time From MCO

How early you can safely fly out of Orlando International after a Port Canaveral cruise, how the last morning works, and how to plan the ride to the airport.

If you're flying home from Orlando International Airport (MCO) on the day your cruise ends, skip the early-morning flights. A Disney panelist on planDisney, Disney's planning forum, advises cruise guests to book flights leaving MCO no earlier than 11:25 a.m., and an early-afternoon flight gives you more breathing room. Port Canaveral is about 45 miles from MCO, and MCO asks travelers to reach the security checkpoint 2 hours before departure.

Book your ride from the ship to MCO now, so it's one less thing to plan.

How the last morning works

Ships return to Port Canaveral in the morning, and guests leave in stages. Two examples:

  • Disney Cruise Line: guests who choose Express Walk-Off and carry their own bags can usually start leaving around 7:30 a.m., according to a Disney panelist on planDisney.
  • Royal Caribbean: guests get a colored luggage tag that matches the time they leave the ship, and all guests must leave before the next cruise boards.

Before you reach your ride, you'll go through U.S. customs and collect any bags you didn't carry off. Your cruise line's debarkation information has the details for your sailing.

Work back from your flight time

Here is the math for a 12:30 p.m. flight:

  1. 12:30 p.m.Your flight departs.
  2. 10:30 a.m.At MCO's security checkpoint, 2 hours before departure.
  3. About 10:00 a.m.At the airport, if you're checking bags. Check your airline's bag-drop deadline.
  4. About 9:00 a.m.In your car at the port, allowing about an hour for the 45-mile drive.

That means being off the ship and through customs by about 9 a.m. When you leave the ship isn't fully in your control, so the later your flight, the calmer your morning.

Why book your ride home with Gray Black

  • Booked before you sail. Port Canaveral requires vehicle-for-hire trips to be pre-arranged and pre-paid, so your ride is set before you leave.

  • Room for cruise luggage. The Premium SUV seats up to 6 with luggage, and the 14-passenger van can tow a trailer for extra bags.
  • Your party only. Straight to MCO or your hotel, with no shared stops.
  • Car seats installed on request. Tell us each child's age when you book.
  • Owner-run and vetted. Founded by Kristian Maldonado and run with Amanda Lim. Every driver passes criminal and driving-record background checks.
